OBSERVATORY: OAKLAND

Who and what truly define a neighborhood?

OBSERVATORY: OAKLAND is a visual observation mapping project utilizing a cartographic methodology that combines Kogengaku (Modernologio) and Fluxus and that we developed to reveal the ephemeral or overlooked, and yet essential, qualities of neighborhoods throughout Oakland, California.

What new perceptions evolve when we chart the heights or hairstyles of the residents? Or document species of urban birds? The project includes community mapping workshops with youth and seniors at the Lion Creek Crossings housing development, the Oakland Public Libraries and elsewhere.
