THE STEAM HARDWARE STORE

Hardware store = a cabinet of curiosity = a treasure box of learning opportunities

Did you ever hang out at the hardware store just for fun?  The STEAM Hardware Store is a new type of community learning center that combines a retail store with an arts-integrated science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning center.  This will be a place where youth build a lifelong connection to the sciences, technology, engineering, and math utilizing arts & creativity to engage (making the acronym into “STEAM”) with guidance from professionals, educators and role models of their own communities.

The neighborhood hardware store has long served as a site to nurture creative and critical thinking and skills: envisioning, problem-solving, experimenting, measuring, calculating, drafting, etc. Our hope is to recognize and re-invest in this local asset to make foundational skills acquisition for STEAM learning accessible, tangible, and fun for the 21st century workforce.
